DETAILS:

The Duluth Federal Building and US Courthouse in Duluth, MN contains offices for more than 20 federal agencies, including the US Post Office. The building, built in 1929, has 134,710 square feet of office space for its 142 occupants.

The construction area was confined to the main entrance, stairs and plaza of the building. The work was done during normal working hours with the main entrance being accessible throughout the project. The work consisted of disassembling the existing granite wall, cataloging the pieces to be reused, replacing or repairing the damaged pieces and reassembling the walls and stairs. The existing mortar joints were repointed and all the new and existing stone elements in the construction area were chemically washed. Repairs were made to the existing concrete foundation walls, stairs and window wells. A new granite handicap ramp was constructed to match existing granite. Most of the fill under the plaza deck was removed and replaced with pre-engineered fill and a new concrete deck and drain system. The doors were replaced, made automatic and handicap compliant. Elevation changes were made to allow wheelchair access through the main entrance. Landscaping was completely reestablished within the front plaza area.
