DETAILS:
The USCG Station Hatteras Inlet is located on the south end of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Due to severe weather conditions and frequent flooding the building is an elevated concrete block and brick building. The building is supported by concrete beams and columns that rest on concrete piles. The severe weather conditions had severely corroded the existing concrete and underlying reinforcing of the columns, beams and slab.
After geotechnical and structural analysis the repair areas of the building were shored and the deteriorated concrete was removed. Corroded reinforcing was replaced or abrasive blasted and coated with a corrosion inhibiter. Cracks at beams and columns were epoxy injected. Beams and columns were repaired using a polymer modified repair material. Existing garage floor concrete slab was removed and a new reinforced concrete floor was placed, floor was further strengthened with galvanized structural steel, supported and anchored to the existing pile caps. Numerous brick were removed and replaced and portions of the building were repointed. A new vinyl skirting was installed around entire perimeter of the building. Existing garage doors were removed and replaced with new. All existing drain line penetrations through the concrete floor slab were removed and new pipes were plumbed and tied back into the existing plumbing. New stainless steel weather hoods were installed at all exhaust fan and louver locations.
